Yin, Yang and Science

Our bodies are whole, dynamic ecosystems. When the landscape becomes imbalanced, pain and disease result.

Health and healing are a natural process. So is disease.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, health is achieved when there is a harmonious balance between yin and yang—two opposing forces that represent rest and action, healing and exertion, quiet and stimulation.

The Autonomic Nervous System

In modern scientific terms, this balance is described in the autonomic nervous system by the parasympathetic (rest and digest) and sympathetic (fight or flight) branches.

Our goal is movement towards balance.

Our lifestyles - attitudes, thoughts, actions, habits and habitat - have a huge effect on our bodies' ability to naturally heal. As modern people, we tend to work hard, play hard, have stressful lives and obligations, and think (thinkthinkthink) way too much about it all.

We also live in a world of chemicals, electromagnetic radiation, opportunistic bacteria and viruses.

Modern life often pushes people into a constant state of stress, causing the sympathetic nervous system to stay overactive. This imbalance can lead to a variety of health problems, including chronic pain, anxiety, fatigue, and disease.

Under these conditions, the dynamic flow of our bodies' natural healing intelligence can get confused, damaged, or interrupted, leading to a weakening of the overall system.

This overwhelm and weakening of the system is at the root of most disease and pain in the body.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Traditional Chinese Medicine takes a holistic approach to diagnose this blockage and utilizes safe and natural means to unblock our qi (chee) and keep it flowing smoothly.

Understanding the dis-ease process holistically allows us to treat you at a profound level - the root. Natural and gentle treatments help to regain a state of balance.

Acupuncture helps to rebalance these systems, restoring the body’s natural flow of energy, known as qi ("chee"), and encouraging deep healing.

How Acupuncture Works

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the flow of qi. This process activates the body’s own healing mechanisms, improving circulation, reducing inflammation, and enhancing the flow of vital energy.

The Benefits of Acupuncture

  • Nervous System Rebalance: Many clients experience a deep sense of relaxation and calm after treatment, as acupuncture helps activate the parasympathetic nervous system. This release can provide relief from anxiety, stress, and tension that have been building up for years.

  • Pain Relief: When acupuncture points are properly stimulated, tension and trauma can be released from the nervous system allowing for a quick and lasting reduction in pain.

  • Improved Blood Flow: By stimulating key acupuncture points, the flow of qi and blood in the body is unblocked and regulated, leading to enhanced energy, circulation, and better communication between the various parts of your mind-body system.

More Than Just Needles

My practice integrates a variety of complementary modalities rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine, all designed to bring balance to the mind, body, and spirit.

  • Chinese Herbal Medicine: Herbs work in harmony with acupuncture to nourish the body’s yin and yang, providing additional support for the healing journey.

  • Diet and Nutrition: Optimizing diet based on each person’s unique constitution can unlock the body’s potential for healing, boosting energy levels and supporting long-term health.

  • Tui Na (Chinese Medical Massage): This hands-on therapy releases tight muscles, improves mobility, and works to unblock energy at a deeper level.

Healing the Nervous System

Acupuncture’s superpower is its ability to reset the autonomic nervous system.

Chronic stress often leaves people in a heightened state of fight or flight, which wears down health over time. Through acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, the deep nervous system resets—activating the relaxation and rejuvenation. This is where the body repairs itself.

As we train the nervous system to relax, it also learns to activate the stress response less frequently and only when truly necessary.

Eventually, the body and mind become harmonized so that we can break free from chronic stress and unlock new levels of resilience and strength.
